Budapest Riot – Budapest Protest

Posted in Budapest Articles by arpiboy on October 25th, 2006

During the 2006 October 23. Budapest Revolution Anniversary events there were some riots in Budapest streets. The first thing was some protesters stole a tank used in the 1956 revolution. The tank was on the street from a museum for the anniversary event. The tank driver was an old man who could drive the tank. Fortunately the tank has only minimal fuel so he could drive it for only 200 meters far.
The police arrested him and the other riots started to “demonstrate”. The policemen had to use tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon to disperse crowds of rioters on the street.

This happened on the Deak Ferenc square. I just go up from the subway and saw this battle of policemen and rioters. I hardly take a breath because of the tear gas in the subway station.

After this I went to the direction of the Astoria.

At the Astoria (it is a crossing in Budapest and the name of the Astoria Hotel there) a big counter party event held by the FIDESZ many people there. After a while the event started to disperse and started to transform a Budapest riot demonstration against the MSZP and Ferenc Gyurcsany Prime Minister of Hungary.

Budapest 1956 Revolution 50th Anniversary

Posted in Budapest Tours by arpiboy on October 24th, 2006

The Andrassy boulevard (ut) was the other place of the 50th anniversary of the Budapest revolution of 1956. Andrassy Street is a 2 kilometers long street in Budapest from the Deak Ferenc ter to the Heroes Square in the middle of it there is the Octagon (Oktogon).

Just to understand what was this event all about. 23 of October is one of the biggest national holiday in Hungary. 50 years ago the Hungarians tried to wipe out the communism and Soviet dictatorship from Hungary, but they’ve failed. They did not get any help from USA or other Western European nations. So we had to wait up to 1998 to do so.
Just imagine the suppression in the communism there were no rights to the citizens to speak and do things freely or just go to Western Europe for holiday. We had to wait years to buy a new paper car called Trabant and made in the DDR Eastern Germany.

But the Hungarians wanted to be free and we were the first old country in the socialism who quit from Russia (Soviet Union) and the other eastern block countries followed us. Maybe you see the movies called “The Wall” about the Berlin Wall you can get the picture over it.

So the event was held over a distance of several hundred meters, starting from the Oktogon in the direction of Heroes’ Square.

The frontier of the Roman Empire ran along the line of the Danube River, and Budapest’s 2000 years old forerunner was called Aquincum. It was an important military center, but a civilian town of merchants and artists also grew up around it. Remains of the military amphitheatre can be seen at Obuda and a mile further on ruins of the streets of the civilian town of its houses.

Millenar park Budapest photo
Millenar Park is relatively new park in Budapest actually in Buda behind the Mammut 2 Shopping Mall. Before the millenar park there was a big factory there named GANZ. The factory has not working for a while and closed. They left the buildings but renovated them and made a nice park with a lake and concert and event halls. In summer this is a good place after shopping in the Mammut Mall to rest a while. Just go out of the mall and behind the Mammut 2 building you can find easily the Millenar Park Budapest or in Hungarian Millenaris Park.
